Fanueil Hall contains many hit bars and music joints but one stands out: Howl at the Moon. It’s not just any regular bar. Dueling pianos, flashing blue and green lights, and the guests are part of the show. They give Bostonians a high energy night that can make even the worst date enjoyable.

Open 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday, the keys never stop. The idea of a piano bar sounds a little old-fashioned. But if you love music and the thrill of competition, this is the place for you. Here’s the deal: two players play piano at once, then another pair takes the stage, and after there is a “4-way.” Sounds exciting. But then there is a fantastic encore with more instrumentalists (drums, guitar, saxophone.)

Howl at the Moon wants the audience involved as much as possible. They want them to feel the energy the musicians feel when they entertain. Howl employees help their guests participate in a choreographed routine that animates popular tunes.  It’s like the bar becomes one whole groove-fest.

This piano bar attracts all age groups. Many business travelers will join in on the action with the regular beantown crowds. And not only do they have a location in Boston, from the east coast to the west they actually have 13 Howl at the Moon bars.

Their drink lists are wide ranged, containing crazy original “Howl” cocktails, as well as buckets, 24 oz. bones, and top of the line liquor. Their beer list mainly contains your hum-drum bud, miller, coors, etc. with a few microbrews here and there. And of course they’re not cheap, but this is Boston we’re talking about here.

On a hopping Friday or Saturday night, the cover charge does range up to $10. The lines are usually out the door and around the corner, so if waiting outside on a November night isn’t really in your itinerary, then call days ahead and get on the guest list if you can.

If you’re a music lover, searching for a great place to get together with friends in Boston this weekend, check out Howl at the Moon and get your piano-party on.
